NSTL just completed final testing of the two products. According to the NSTL test report, "Trend Micro's ScanMail detected significantly more viruses than Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes...and proved itself superior in all areas of testing." Areas tested included those most important when evaluating enterprise antivirus software See antivirus program. (tool) antivirus software - Programs to detect and remove computer viruses. Trend Micro is demonstrating its ScanMail for Lotus Notes virus protection software at Lotusphere at Pedestal No. C189. Better Detection Testing showed that Trend Micro's ScanMail detected 100% of viruses from the 1999 Wild List while Symantec missed 27% of viruses "in the wild." In addition, the report found that Trend Micro detected 90% of viruses in compressed files while Norton Antivirus detected none of the viruses stored in compressed file formats. "We are pleased that third party test results illustrate what our in-house tests have been telling us for a long time -- ScanMail significantly outperforms its competitors," said Eva Chen Eva Chen is a relationship columnist editor. Better Performance According to database scanning tests conducted by NSTL, "ScanMail performed an initial scan and an incremental Additional or increased growth, bulk, quantity, number, or value; enlarged. Incremental cost is additional or increased cost of an item or service apart from its actual cost. scan in significantly less time than Norton AntiVirus did." Trend Micro's ScanMail proved nearly ten times faster (979%) than Norton Antivirus during NSTL's initial database scanning tests. In addition, ScanMail was almost 20% faster than Norton AntiVirus during incremental database scanning, a selective scanning procedure of new and newly modified documents, conducted to save server time and resources. NSTL concluded, "if time is a consideration in the real world, and it always is, then all of this adds up to time and server resources saved." More Features ScanMail also surpassed Norton Antivirus in the functionality and features tests. While ScanMail supported all features tested for, NSTL reported that Norton Antivirus did not support several key features. Those include:
-- Smart Scanning -- Smart Scanning determines if mail from a
trusted server has already been scanned in order for it not to be
scanned again. Trend Micro's ScanMail includes this feature,
which significantly enhances performance in an enterprise
environment, while Norton AntiVirus does not.
-- Stored Forms and Rich Text for Hotspots Testing -- Lotus Notes
Hotspots allow communication of additional information in a Lotus
Notes document but can be maliciously programmed. The report
found that Trend Micro's ScanMail scans for both macros and
scripts within Hotspots while Norton AntiVirus does not scan for
either.
-- Email Traffic Monitoring -- In addition to providing a virus
incident activity log in a Notes database format, Trend Micro's
ScanMail includes an email traffic monitoring component that
provides vital statistics such as email size vs. virus size,
total email traffic, email traffic peak information, and an email
traffic summary. The report found that these email traffic
monitoring features were missing from Norton AntiVirus.
Commented Chen, "In order for enterprises to implement security policies into their infrastructure, a rich feature set is crucial. Our products are designed to help IT administrators manage their networks effectively and efficiently -- each feature plays its part in enhancing productivity and keeping corporations virus free." In conclusion, the NSTL report stated that "ScanMail proved itself superior in all areas of testing."
