NRPA partnership with sports illustrated launched with media blitz.

 was a major player as Newport, R.I., was announced as the first of 50 American Sportstowns last month at the kick-off of Sports Illustrated's 50th anniversary, Sports Illustrated Sports Illustrated is the largest weekly American sports magazine owned by media conglomerate Time Warner. It has over 3 million subscribers and is read by 23 million adults each week, including over 18 million men, 19% of the adult males in the country.  chose NRPA to be its partner for the year-long celebration of "Enhancing the Quality of Sports Through Parks and Recreation."

The Newport kick-off received major coverage on the NBC NBC
 in full National Broadcasting Co.

Major U.S. commercial broadcasting company. It was formed in 1926 by RCA Corp., General Electric Co. (GE), and Westinghouse and was the first U.S. company to operate a broadcast network.
 station in Providence Providence, city (1990 pop. 160,728), state capital and seat of Providence co., NE R.I., a port at the head of Providence Bay; founded by Roger Williams 1636, inc. as a city 1832. , including an interview with Sue Cooper, Newport's director of parks and recreation. The Providence Journal and Newport Daily News quoted NRPA Executive Director John Thorner and covered a presentation by NRPA President Jonathan Korfhage. The next day, NBC's "Today Show" featured Anniversary Spokesperson David Robinson David Robinson or Dave Robinson is a name shared by the following individuals:
  • David Robinson (philanthropist) (1904-1987), British entrepreneur, philanthropist and owner of racing stables who was knighted in 1985
 (see photo above) talking about visiting the park and recreation center in Newport. See www.nrpa.org for details on the anniversary kick-off.

NRPA will continue to be in the media spotlight Spotlight can refer to at least three types of lighting:
  • a searchlight;
  • stage lighting used in theatre to focus an audience's attention on a performer or event, known as a Followspot;
 throughout Sports Illustrated's anniversary celebration. Sports Illustrated will announce a new Sportstown--one per state--each week. Also, Sports Illustrated's 5 million subscribers received their first anniversary-related issue with a letter that included NRPA's logo and information about NRPA's involvement. In addition, during the next year, NRPA will run, for free, 18 full-page ads in Sports Illustrated that highlight the role of parks and recreation in keeping America active and healthy, These ads are valued at $5 million.
