Healthy People 2010 details the federal government's goals for increasing the health and wellness of our society. Science-based and data-driven, it's the most comprehensive document in the world with regards to health. But its sheer size is also one of its weaknesses--the massive document doesn't contain clear action steps for reaching the health objectives that it outlines. So the department has teamed with organizations such as NRPA to take this national document and translate it to local action.

The purpose of the partnership is to improve public health by encouraging physical activity, reducing the incidence of overweight and obesity, and improving the health of communities. The goal will be achieved through programs, services and products that:

* Prevent chronic disease risk factors associated with physical inactivity physical inactivity A sedentary state. Cf Physical activity.  and obesity;

* Reduce environmental barriers to physical activity at the community-level nationwide, including barriers for the disabled;

* Enhance access and opportunities for increased physical activity;

* Increase levels of physical activity among youth and adults; and

* Reduce levels of overweight and obesity in youth and adults.

Specifically, NRPA's role comes through promoting community-based health education and activity programs aimed at increasing physical activity and reducing overweight and obesity, a serious health risk for all Americans. NRPA has many such means of promotion, including programs such as Hearts N' Parks, Active Options and Pool Cool, as well as educational means.

"Our communities' parks are truly national treasures and have long been recognized as places of beauty and green spaces for recreation," says Dr. Eve Slater slat·er
