NRL librarian receives Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award. (SLA News).


SLA member Laurie Stackpole, chief librarian of the Navy Research Laboratory (NRL), is the recipient of a Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award.

Stackpole directs the Ruth H. Hooker Research Library, a specialized scientific and technical information resource servicing NRL and the Office of Naval Research The U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR), headquartered in Arlington, Virginia (Ballston), is the office within the U.S. Department of the Navy that coordinates, executes, and promotes the science and technology programs of the U.S.  (ONR). In this capacity, she plans, develops and implements a broad program of information services, giving oversight to and participating in the design and development of systems that provide NRL and ONR researchers with around-the-clock access to scientific and technical information.

A partial excerpt from the award citation reads: "For meritorious achievement and service to the United States Navy United States Navy

Major branch of the U.S. military forces, charged with defending the nation at sea and maintaining security on the seas wherever U.S. interests extend. The Continental Navy was established by the Continental Congress in 1775.
 and the Naval Research Laboratory for her pioneering work in developing and applying digital library technologies... Ms. Stackpole is especially commended for her role as a founding member of the Consortium of Naval Libraries, in helping to develop an electronic licensing program that has saved $5 million over the past three years and provided critical information resources at the desktops of 90,000 users..."

Stackpole received an M.L.S. at the Catholic University of America Catholic University of America, at Washington, D.C.; the national university of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States; coeducational; founded 1887 and opened 1889. , in Washington, D.C. She also holds an M.A. in physics from Smith College (Northampton, MA) and an A.B. in physics from Trinity College in Washington, D.C.
