NRG Energy Funds New Tijuana School Building.PRINCETON, N.J. -- NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NRG) donated $160,000 to build a school for Responsibility, a non-profit organization focused on educating the children of pepenadores--those who survive by sorting trash in a landfill on the outskirts of Tijuana. As a result of NRG's contribution, children living in the Colonia Fausto Gonzalez area will be able to attend a brand new school building comprised of a five-classroom preschool and a separate community building that houses a computer lab, teen center and art school. The community center will be used for adult education classes, as a safe after-school location for high school students and for community gatherings, such as the June 19 kindergarten graduation. "Education is the key to the exit door of the life of poverty these children were born into," said David Lynch, President of Responsibility. "By funding the construction of this new preschool, NRG is unlocking that door and holding it wide open." The original building, now a dilapidated plywood structure, could no longer accommodate the growing number of children enrolled in classes. The new preschool, underwritten by NRG, opened at the beginning of the year and is more than double in size. It is a clean, well-constructed and bright building with cheerfully painted walls, new furniture and an array of school supplies. "Mother Teresa once referred to the people of Fausto Gonzalez as among 'the world's most destitute.' Today, through the efforts of Responsibility, a second generation of these children is being educated and empowered through their own education to realize a better path in life," said David Crane, President and CEO, NRG Energy. "We have a deep admiration for the team at Responsibility and we are pleased and, indeed, honored to help them as they help the children of Fausto Gonzalez," he added. The families who live and work in the Colonia Fausto Gonzalez area of Tijuana, Mexico--on the edge of a hot, dusty landfill--have no sewers, no plumbing and scarcely any electricity. Many live in cardboard homes. But they are industrious people with a burning desire to education their children. The original preschool was built through the efforts of Responsibility, an organization founded by Lynch, a native New Yorker who, 27 years ago, traveled to Mexico to spend a month helping 35 families working as scavengers at the dump. He never left. Now, what began as a makeshift classroom on a blue tarp has opened doors for over 6,000 local children. The Tijuana preschool is one of several projects currently being funded through NRG's Global Giving initiative. Respect for our communities is a core value at NRG, and through our Global Giving program, the Company invests its resources to strengthen the communities where we live and work. NRG has donated millions of dollars to non-profit organizations that address vital community needs through targeted and sustainable service programs consistent with our four focus areas: community and economic development, education, environment and human welfare.
