The 119,040 s/f Wal-Mart store is located in a redevelopment of the former Laneco Supermarket. Wal-Mart currently operates 31 Wal-Mart discount stores in New Jersey of which eight are located in shopping centers shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into owned and managed by NRDC. Currently under construction by NRDC in Rockaway Rockaway, narrow peninsula, c.10 mi (16 km) long, SW Long Island, SE N.Y., in Queens borough of New York City. Separating Jamaica Bay from the Atlantic Ocean and isolated from the rest of New York City, the densely populated peninsula owes its growth to road and rail , NJ, is another Wal-Mart anchored shopping center scheduled to open in February 2005. Also under construction are expansions of existing Wal-Mart stores in NRDC's portfolio to supercenters. NRDC also has seven additional projects planned for the next two years that collectively will add more than 2.2 million square feet to its 14 million square foot retail portfolio. Construction has begun or is scheduled to commence by early summer on most of the projects, which include the Target anchored 242,000 s/f Hadley Shopping Center II located in South Plainfield South Plainfield, borough (1990 pop. 20,489), Middlesex co., NE N.J.; inc. 1926. It is the seat of several research and consulting firms and has plants that make chemicals, plastics, spices and flavorings, cosmetics, rubber products, pigments, electrical machinery, , NJ; the 110,000 s/f Commons in Phillipsburg, NJ. |
