NRC STAFF ISSUES ASSESSMENT OF TROJAN OPERATIONS
WALNUT CREEK, Calif., July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Nuclear Regulatory

Commission staff has issued a Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP) report covering Portland General Electric Co.'s management of the Trojan Nuclear Plant. The report covers activities from April 1, 1991, through May 31, 1992.
Overall, the staff found the performance of licensed activities at Trojan to be generally good and directed toward safe facility operation. Organizational and managment changes and the implementation of management initiatives resulted in improved performance in most functional areas.
Performance in seven functional areas was assessed and assigned a rating from Category 1 through Category 3. Category 1 represents a superior level of performance, Category 2 a good level and Category 3 an acceptable level. An improving or declining trend is indicated if a definite trend is discernible and continuation of the trend could result in a change in a performance rating for the next SALP cycle.
The results of the last assessment and the current assessment are as follows:
 Rating Rating
Functional Area Last Period This Period
 Plant operations 1 1
 Radiological controls 2 2 declining
 Maintenance/Surveillance 3 improving 2
 Emergency preparedness 2 2
 Security 2 1
 Engineering/Technical support 2 declining 2
 Safety assessment/
 Quality verification 2 2
Members of the NRC staff will meet with PGE management at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 1992, at the Trojan Nuclear Plant site, 71760 Columbia River Highway, Rainier, Oregon, to discuss the current assessment. The meeting is open to the public.
