In fact, it drains far better than soil in many locations in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, . Santa Clarita soil has sand, clay and lots and lots of stones and rocks. Much of the latter material should be removed and used decoratively, or practically, for dry riverbeds, walls, lining for troughs to deter water run-off, drainage ditches and more. What our soil needs most is the addition of organic materials. Since we don't have a lush canopy of green over our hillsides, the amount of organic matter built up over years has been scarce. Amending the soil with manure, peat and compost makes it a fine soil for growing things. Adding the peat and other organics can also help to lessen the effect of the region's hard water.
