75-61 victory over Sam Houston State on Tuesday at Pauley Pavilion.

He is noted as being one of the youngest speakers ever accepted into the National Speakers Association.  scored a game-high 18 points and made all eight of his free throws while Arron Afflalo Arron Agustin Afflalo (born October 15, 1985) is an American professional basketball player, currently with the Detroit Pistons. He recently completed a three-year career at University of California, Los Angeles in the Pacific Ten Conference of the NCAA as the starting shooting  added 12 points. Darren Collison Darren Michael Collison (born August 23, 1987) is an American basketball player. The right-hander is a native of Rancho Cucamonga, California, and is currently playing his sophomore season for the University of California, Los Angeles.  had 11 points and nine assists. UCLA had seven blocks and outrebounded Sam Houston State, albeit barely, 32-30.

The Bruins didn't have their first lead until 8:20 left in the first half, although there certainly was no reason for the Bruins to panic since they haven't been able to make a big run against inferior opponents until late in the first half or just after halftime.

That strategy isn't likely to work well in the coming games. But it was good enough for the top-ranked Bruins. It's the first time UCLA has won its first 10 games since starting the 1993-94 season 14-0.

UCLA played then-No. 6 Texas A&M in the Wooden Classic and Kentucky in the Maui Invitational, but UCLA has yet to play a true road game since those were on neutral courts.

Tuesday's game - the first between UCLA and Sam Houston State - was a yawner. The Bearkats played their deliberate offense with lots of passes, backdoor See trapdoor.  cuts and shot-clock rundowns. They found some open 3-point shots, but couldn't knock them down, making just 2 for 11 in the first half.

, where they've shot 59.8 percent this season. UCLA made its first 10 free throws and finished by making 12 of 13 in the first half and 17 of 21 for the game (81 percent). Lorenzo Mata, who has made just 27 percent of his free throws this year, had just one attempt and missed.

The Bearkats - who had three players score in double figures - were content, at times, to throw up poor shot, which could've been a reflection of five blocked shots by UCLA in the first half.

UCLA wrestled the lead away when Josh Shipp made a shot in the lane to give the Bruins a 15-14 lead.

Once the Bruins led, they didn't give it back, but they didn't exactly look like the nation's No. 1 team. Sam Houston State trailed 35-29 at halftime and trailed by 11 early in the second half. But the Bearkats rallied and closed the gap to 40-35 on a shot-clock buzzer beater by Jejuan Plair.

Sam Houston State employed the same strategy on its next possession, working the clock all the way down, but turned the ball over on a shot- clock violation.

The Bearkats closed the lead to four points at 44-40 on a three-point play by Plair, but freshman Russell Westbrook nailed an outside jumper on the other end to answer.

Then came an assortment of UCLA fastbreaks and dunks. Michael Roll made a 3-pointer from the right wing with 10:30 left to start a 9-0 run. Shipp had six points in that stretch and the game finally was unofficially over. Now, the focus is on Michigan.

UCLA's home game against Michigan (11-1) on Saturday will be a nationally televised broadcast. The Bruins haven't been tested much, but neither have the Wolverines. Michigan scheduled a list of cream puffs too, including Youngstown State, Wofford, Maryland-Baltimore County and Central Connecticut State. Michigan's lone loss was to North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (E), South Carolina and Georgia (S), Tennessee (W), and Virginia (N).
