Highland is in first place.

Thanks to two ties last week, Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill is no longer in its familiar spot atop the Golden League girls' soccer standings. The Rebels enter tonight's game at Littlerock a half point behind Highland, which has as much adjusting to do in its new position as Quartz Hill does.

``They're excited,'' Highland coach Lemuel Galvao said. ``But they have to make sure they don't get too excited.

``I saw signs of it happening against (Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

) on Thursday. At halftime, I told them `Hold hands, we're going to sing Kumbaya and sway back and forth.' They just looked at me and they started laughing a little. I told them, `That's right, relax, have fun.' They were so tense.''

The Bulldogs (8-6-2, 4-0-1) returned eight starters from last season's second-place team and believed they would challenge for the title, but even Galvao picked Quartz Hill to finish first. When the Rebels lost star Kellie Cox to an ankle injury a few weeks ago - she is expected to return in early February - Highland was the first team to take advantage.

The Bulldogs, the last team before Quartz Hill to win the league title, played Quartz Hill to a scoreless tie Jan. 18 and third-place Lancaster did the same against the Rebels (12-1-2, 3-0-2) last Thursday.

``Our defense was good,'' said Galvao, whose team was left defending considerably more shots than it took. ``We took away all the easy shots and left them with all the hard shots and they couldn't make 'em.''

Meghan Stewart was a key element in the Rebels' scoring problem. The four-year varsity starter has given up just two goals in league.

Of Highland's six nonleague losses, four were by one goal. Another was to Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood, the top-ranked team in Division IV.

Although they didn't score against Quartz Hill, the Bulldogs' offense has improved since they rearranged their midfield mid·field

Highland hosts Quartz Hill in the final week of the regular season. The Rebels will likely have Cox back and, even if they don't have her, can be counted on to provide an intense contest as they look for revenge. Galvao warned his team to expect tougher games than before from the entire league, though.

``Like I told them, everybody is coming for us,'' he said. ``Why? Because we're on top.''

The Bulldogs host Palmdale tonight.

Gookins and Tony Lawson helped give Quartz Hill (9-3-2, 5-0) a slight lead in the Golden League boys' standings when both scored in a 2-1 victory against Lancaster (9-5-1, 4-1).
