NOW, HANKLESS HUNTING DASH FOLLOWS RETIRED POP ON OLN HIT.

Byline: Keith Lair Staff Writer

POMONA - Dez Young admits he has broken the first two rules of television. But he happens to have had one of the top franchises on the Outdoor Life Network.

``The first rule is to never work with children because they will always upstage you,'' the television host says. ``The second rule is to never have animals on your program because they will upstage you. I have broken both rules.''

The second rule has made Young's Llewellin setters Llewellin setter

 among hunters and nonhunters alike.

Henry was the star of Young's series, ``Hunting with Hank,'' which just completed a six-year run as one of OLN's top series in terms of viewership, the network's Eric Ray says.

Hank, now 10, was recently inducted into the National Bird Dog Museum. His son, Dash, who turns 13 months Friday, is the newest star of Young's series, now titled ``Upland Days with Dash and Dez.'' The season's second episode will air at 7 a.m. Saturday.

Dash also will be making his first Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California.  at the second-annual International Sportsmen's Exposition at Fairplex Park. The show will begin Thursday and the three will perform Friday through Sunday with bird-dog exhibits and question-and-answer sessions. In addition, the dogs will be available for petting, hugging and smooching.

``They're on a table, so kids look Hank and Dash right in the face,'' Young said of the time between his demonstrations. ``First, the kids will pet them. Then, they'll hug them. Then, they'll kiss them. Then, they'll want their picture taken with them.''

It's a TV show that is different, Young said, in that it draws more than just hunters.

``The quality of our program and the way we do it is very different than most shows,'' Young said. ``It has a different philosophy. Hank was the star. Dash is the star. I'm just the host. We take a lot of time to tell stories in each episode. It's not a show about hunting. We don't shoot birds every two seconds. It's a show about friends and family. I guess that's why it appeals to hunters and nonhunters alike.''

There is hunting in the show. In the premier episode of ``Upland Days,'' Young, who just turned 60, takes both dogs to eastern Washington

to hunt for pheasant pheasant, common name for some members of a family (Phasianidae) of henlike birds related to the grouse and including the Old World partridge, the peacock, various domestic and jungle fowls, and the true pheasants (genus Phasianus). . He then takes just Dash to hunt for chukkar. Young fires his shotgun only four times in the 30-minute show. Each segment is divided into a chapter, and Young considers each episode an edition.

``It was like when I was growing up,'' he said. ``There were the great outdoor authors with fabulous activities. They were filled with adventures in each volume and each edition. That's why I have volume numbers, edition numbers and chapter numbers.''

``Hunting With Hank'' had seven volumes and 67 editions. Though there is nothing physically wrong with Hank, Young decided to retire his star before Hank loses a step.

``I know people are just broken-hearted that the show has ended,'' Young said. ``It was my decision. There is only one Hank and only one `Hunting With Hank.' That's why we decided to do the transition.''

``Upland Days'' and ``Hunting With Hank'' are more like companion pieces. They still have the same feel. Young, a former musician, still writes all of the folk music folk music: see folk song.

, another way his show is different.

``An amateur trainer,'' he said as if he is clarifying his status. ``People ask me all the time what to do. I always stress that I am not a professional, but I tell them what I do with my dogs.''

He admits Hank's innate ability to hunt ``overcame my errors in training him.''

``In that way, I think Dash will become a better dog because I have learned from my previous mistakes. I'm a better trainer now. Given the opportunity, Dash will be a better bird dog.''

Young, whose given name is Frank Dennis Frank Dennis was a first class cricketer who played in 89 matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 1928 to 1933 and 3 for the Minor Counties from 1936 to 1939. He was awarded his coveted Yorkshire cap in 1929.

``In this genre, every year people introduce hundreds of pilots, of which (OLN programming vice president) Peter (Englehart) will look at half a dozen,'' he said. ``So in that respect, I am lucky.''

Luck also has a lot to do with it as in his choice of dogs. He trained two Labrador retrievers This list of famous Labradors covers notable individual dogs that belong to this breed. ``We want to keep it close-knit,'' Young said of his stars and guests. ``We want to keep it entertaining.''
