NOVELL TAKES CROSS-PLATFORM SUPPORT TO DESKTOP.

Novell, Inc. a leader in eBusiness solutions and Net services software has introduced the Novell(R) Native File Access Pack, which gives users of Windows, Macintosh, UNIX and Linux desktop operating systems access to storage on Novell NetWare(R) servers without any Novell software on their workstations. Managed through Novell eDirectory(TM), Novell Native File Access Pack lets users of these disparate systems access NetWare storage right out of the box using standard Internet protocols and the networking features included in each operating system, giving organizations a unified network that is less complex, faster and more secure. The Novell Native File Access Pack further establishes Novell's leadership in managing heterogeneous network environments, providing companies the freedom to choose what works best for them and helping them leverage the technologies they have.

With the Novell Native File Access Pack, users are able to efficiently retrieve and store the information they need on the network, regardless of the type of workstation they have, while system administrators gain improved management capabilities, plus the proven security and reliability benefits of NetWare. Novell is extending its industry-leading cross-platform support in the server realm to the desktop, ensuring customers can use the technology they want while still maintaining the security and manageability of their network.

"The Novell Native File Access Pack securely and simply removes data access obstacles from our network," said Ed Kirkpatrick, network administrator for Madison School District in Rexburg, Idaho. "By allowing our Windows, Macintosh, UNIX and Linux clients to natively access NetWare storage right out of the box, we will be able to integrate users into the network as never before. The power of eDirectory makes management simple while actually increasing the security of the network."

Previous access solutions have required Novell client software on workstations to take advantage of the management features of eDirectory. Not anymore. Now, network administrators can manage Windows, Macintosh, UNIX and Linux workstation users and assign access controls just as they would with a NetWare client. In addition, the Novell Native File Access Pack leverages the native authentication features of each desktop operating system to securely transmit a user's password to a NetWare server. The password credentials are verified against the user's password in eDirectory, providing secure authentication to the NetWare server.

"More and more, customers need cost-effective means to connect their users and information using disparate hardware and software systems," said Jeff Hawkins, vice president of Novell's storage business team. "With the Novell Native File Access Pack, we are providing legions of computer users who don't use Windows PCs access to the most reliable and secure networking and storage platform on the market in NetWare. These users can now be managed with Novell eDirectory, which simplifies and accelerates an organization's transition to a unified network where users have access to what they need when they need it, regardless of operating system."

Internet Protocols

The Novell Native File Access Pack uses standard Internet protocols, reducing the number of network protocols to be managed while increasing overall network performance.

-- Windows users access NetWare using the Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol over TCP/IP.

-- Macintosh users access NetWare using the Apple* Filing Protocol (AFP) over TCP/IP.

-- UNIX and Linux users access NetWare using the Network File System (NFS) protocol over TCP/IP.
