NOVALOG sampling world's smallest IrDA-compliant module.

COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 2, 1996--NOVALOG Inc. Tuesday announced availability of engineering samples of its MiniSIR Transceiver Module.

The new module measures only 0.37 x 0.15 x 0.15 inches (9.4 x 3.8 x 3.8mm). As such, it is believed to be the world's smallest infrared (IR) transmitter/receiver (transceiver) module. Compliant with the Infrared Data Association See IrDA.

(standard, body) Infrared Data Association - (IrDA) A non-profit trade association providing standards to ensure the quality and interoperability of infrared (IR) hardware.
(IrDA) 1.0 standard, it supports wireless IR data-transmission rates up to 115.2 kilobits per second (unit) kilobits per second - (kbps, kb/s) A unit of data rate where 1 kb/s = 1000 bits per second. This contrasts with units of storage where 1 Kb = 1024 bits (note upper case K).  (kbps).

Production parts of the MiniSIR module are expected in the fourth quarter.

MiniSIR enables IR point-to-point wireless communications and data transfer between computers, PDAs, electronic organizers, printers, modems, cellular phones, pagers and other electronic devices that have an IrDA-compatible port.

Norm Argast, NOVALOG's president and chief executive officer, said: ``Having such a tiny module available allows customers with very little space and low power demands the opportunity to incorporate wireless IR into their devices with a minimum of real estate, power and cost.''

``Previously, IrDA-compliant modules required up to 10 discrete components to complete the wireless IR function,'' Argast said. ``The only external component needed with our MiniSIR module is a single, current-limiting resistor.''

Designed to operate down to 2.7 volts, the module supports IrDA 1.0 data rates of 2400bps to 115.2kbps at distances from zero to more than one meter, while maintaining zero latency. MiniSIR is also ASK- and Consumer IR-compatible.

The module comes in a Surface Mount Technology (SMT (1) (Surface Mount Technology) See surface mount.

(2) (Station ManagemenT) An FDDI network management protocol that provides direct management. Only one node requires the software.

Unit pricing of the MiniSIR Transceiver Module is $3.50 in quantities of 10,000. For product and sales information, contact John Chimoures at 714/429-1120 (fax 714/549-5711). Additional product information is available on NOVALOG's Web site at www.novalog.com.
