NOVA CORPORATION OF ALBERTA ANNOUNCES RESULTS OF INDEPENDENT TECHNICAL AUDIT

NOVA CORPORATION OF ALBERTA ANNOUNCES RESULTS
 OF INDEPENDENT TECHNICAL AUDIT
CALGARY, Alberta, March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- An independent technical audit of NOVA's Alberta natural gas transmission activities has confirmed that NOVA's facilities design and construction standards are comparable to standards used throughout the industry.
Related to utilization of the transportation system, the audit identified several areas in which discussions with customers may lead to further enhancements of NOVA's ongoing commitment to provide cost- effective pipeline service.
Specifically, the audit confirmed the appropriateness of the current system expansion programs as described in NOVA's annual plans filed with the Alberta Energy Conservation Board (ERCB). These plans have resulted in capital investment of more than $1.3 billion in gas transmission facilities over the past two years. Capital spending in 1992 is estimated to exceed $500 million to meet customer requests for service.
The purpose of the audit was to review, critique and gather information on the operation of the existing NOVA system and the NOVA system design procedures and philosophies. The objective was to identify specific areas in which alternative design methods could be implemented to better serve the diverse needs of the industry.
The audit was conducted by a team of independent engineering consultants under the direction of the ERCB and the Facility Liaison Committee, which comprises representatives from NOVA and its gas transmission customers. It was conducted over the past four months with the full cooperation of NOVA, which provided free access to information and personnel to the consultant team.
"We are committed to providing the most cost-effective pipeline transmission service for our customers. We were pleased to participate in the technical audit because all efforts to improve effectiveness and reliability of the system are positive. We will be working closely with customers to determine how recommended changes could be adopted to best meet the needs of all groups," said B. W. Simpson, president and chief operating officer of NOVA's Alberta Gas Transmission Division.
One area raised for further discussion was NOVA's current practice of designing its system to meet peak day gas deliveries rather than more average deliveries. However, adopting new practices such as curtailment of intra-Alberta deliveries -- one of the audit suggestions -- would result in a significant change to the service NOVA provides its customers.
"As a result, it is important that we discuss this recommendation -- and other findings in the report -- to ensure that everybody understands the implications and significance of such suggestions. We expect these discussions will occur over the next several months in conjunction with our regular customer meetings," Simpson said.
NOVA is a widely held company operating internationally from headquarters in Calgary. NOVA builds its future on pipelines, and the manufacturing and marketing of chemicals produced primarily from Alberta natural resources.
