NOTRE DAME GETS ANOTHER SHUTOUT NOTRE DAME 52, B. MONT 0.

Byline: Gary Miereanu Special to the Daily News

One isn't such a lonely number. Just ask Notre Dame opponents. They'd love to post even a single point.

The No. 2-ranked Knights (5-0-1), notched their second consecutive shutout and third of the season in routing visiting Bishop Montgomery 52-0 Friday night in a nonleague contest.

The Knights' defense has given up just two touchdowns in six games - one to Lynwood in the season opener and another four weeks ago to Saugus. It has been 13 quarters since the defense has allowed a touchdown.

The first-team defense allowed just 91 yards to Bishop Montgomery (3-3), even scoring on Jeffrey Sobel's 31-yard fumble return.

Notre Dame's offense was also nearly perfect, as the first team scored on each of its six posessions before taking to the bench in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Phil Beckman connected on 7 of 9 attempts for 156 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Jim Sharp and an 8-yard scoring toss to Miguel Armendariz.

Sharp dropped one of Beckman's two incompletions five yards from the end zone with no one around. Beckman didn't attempt a pass in the second half.

``My offensive line gave me time and made the holes so we could run the ball down their throat and throw over them,'' said Beckman, noting the difference in offense from last week's 0-0 tie against Damien. ``We had to prove ourselves to a lot of people tonight, and hopefully we got that off of us.''

Armendariz added 93 rushing yards on six carries, including a 68-yard scoring run on the second half's first play.

Carlos Portillo chipped in with a 13-yard touchdown run, and Brian Magcalas had a 2-yard scoring run.

`'I'm real happy that we scored on every possession with the first-team offense,'' Notre Dame coach Kevin Rooney said, ``and our defense continued to play well. We really did some good things tonight.''
