The Knights, it would seem, deserve better, a chance to find out where they stand among the best of the best. For the third consecutive year, the Knights are the champions of their division, the latest title claimed Friday night with a 38-21 victory over Dominguez of Compton at Notre Dame High.

Notre Dame led only 17-14 early in the third quarter after quarterback Garrett Green threw an interception, only his third of the season, but Green came back to lead two consecutive scoring drives and give the Knights a comfortable 31-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Green ran 11 times for 114 yards, and junior Rodney Glass gained 104 yards on nine carries.

``We tried not to think about the expectations,'' Green said, ``but it was important for us to prove that we deserved the kind of recognition we were getting.''

As usual, the Notre Dame defense did its part. The Knights entered the game having allowed just fewer than 12 points per game this season but faced a significant challenge in a quartet of Dominguez runners.

Notre Dame's defensive front, led by senior Josh Cordray, was up to the challenge. Dominguez had four runners who gained more than 700 yards this season, but Darryl Crummie crum·mie

I knew Dominguez would give us a good game. They're a very talented team, and we hadn't played a team all year with that kind of speed.''

Early on, it seemed the game would be another Notre Dame rout. The Knights recovered a fumble at midfield mid·field

Forbath's 36-yard field goal on the last play of the first quarter gave Notre Dame a 10-0 lead.

Dominguez (12-2) broke through with 42 seconds remaining in the first half on a 4-yard touchdown run by Crummie and looked as though it would take some momentum into halftime, but Glass broke a 75-yard touchdown run as time expired to put the Knights up 17-7 at halftime.

``Coach (Kevin) Rooney told me to just protect the ball,'' Glass said, ``but Cary was behind me and he said, 'No, Rodney, you better score.' I just saw some daylight and took off.''

On the first play of the second half, however, Green threw an interception at midfield. The Dons scored four plays later on a 1-yard run by Johnson to make the score 17-14 and force the Knights into a competitive second half, a rarity for Notre Dame.

The Knights, however, scored on their next two possessions, then celebrated another title. Perhaps an unofficial game can be scheduled with the Div. I or Div. II champion.

``When you feel the way we do, you definitely don't want the season to stop,'' Green said.
