And as far as Agoura coach Charlie Wegher is concerned, the Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  defense is the quickest, most physical the Chargers have encountered this season.

Perhaps. But neither is far off when assessing the other.

``No doubt, they have a number of weapons and I'm very impressed with their offensive line,'' Rooney said.

Notre Dame (8-2), with Noah Reeder, Julian Maurel, Ryan Karapetian and Brandon Braga, have an improving defense that is quick and physical.

``Probably the best defense we've played,'' Wegher said. ``And they're very well coached.''

Of course, any talk about Mission League-champion Notre Dame has to start with outstanding running back Justin Fargas Justin Fargas (born January 25, 1980 in Encino, California) is a football player in the NFL. Professional career

, perhaps the top senior back in the country. Through 10 games, Fargas has 2,199 yards and 27 touchdowns in 224 carries.

In his last game, Fargas ran for 319 yards on 21 carries.

Wegher is realistic about the Chargers' chances of shutting down Fargas.

``You just do the best you can,'' Wegher said. ``He is going to get his yards.''

Agoura will counter with an offense that can control the ball behind Poling (1,483 yards) or produce quick points with McCann (852 yards in 68 of 132 passing) and Helfman (23 catches, 352 yards).

He struggled early in the game before coming on in the fourth quarter - nearly rallying the Chargers to a last-second win.

``Hopefully, he shook off all the rust last week,'' Wegher said.

AGOURA AT NOTRE DAME, 7:30 p.m.

HELFMAN VS. REEDER/MAUREL

Agoura: Tight end Marcus Helfman.

Notre Dame: Defensive ends Noah Reeder, Julian Maurel.

Why it's key: While most of the attention will be on how Agoura will attempt to stop Notre Dame running back Justin Fargas, Helfman presents a challenge to the Knights' defense. If he and Chargers quarterback Ryan McCann get hot as they did last week against Westlake, the game will be close.

The book on Helfman: A great athlete who is also a fine basketball player, the 6-6, 230-pound senior is one reason why the Chargers have the area's eighth-best offense. He has 23 catches for 352 yards and two touchdowns, including five catches for 74 yards last week. He stepped in at quarterback for four games when McCann injured in·jure

his shoulder. Equally adept at receiving and blocking, he is getting the attention of Division I recruiters.

The book on Reeder, Maurel: Reeder, a 6-1, 210-pound junior, and Maurel, a 6-1, 180-pound junior, both will line up against Helfman. Reeder sometimes drops back into pass coverage, depending on the situation.

What Helfman has to do: Use his superior size to get off the line of scrimmage line of scrimmage

Helfman by keeping him on the line as long as possible. That would eliminate one of McCann's favorite options.

What the coaches say: Agoura coach Charlie Wegher on Helfman: ``Marcus just loves to play football. I think if we lined him up at center, he'd be happy to play there. He's a team player. Marcus just needs to continue to make good plays like he did last week. He made some great catches to keep drives going on third and long.''

Notre Dame coach Kevin Rooney on Reeder and Maurel: ``Whenever you're smaller, you need to have great technique. (Helfman) is very tall and has good hands. There will be times when 5-11 guys will be covering him.''
