NOTICE TO EDITORS AND REPORTERS COVERING SOUTH AFRICA AND/OR
 THE AMERICAN JEWELRY INDUSTRY
WHAT: The struggle for the future of South Africa directly affects the fortunes of the American jewelry industry and American jewelry consumers. These fortunes are inextricably linked to the Anglo American Corp. (AAC), one of the world's largest and most complex industrial groups, with an asset base exceeding $14 billion.
Joe Thompson, award-winning editor-in-chief of Modern Jeweler, the leading publication serving the American jewelry industry, recently spent two weeks in South Africa meeting with Anglo American executives; leaders of the African National Congress (ANC), including Nelson Mandela; labor leaders; academics and others in an effort to understand the whirlwind under way there and how it will affect American and South African interests.
Thompson's reports comprise special sections of the November and December issues of Modern Jeweler. Copies of the manuscripts are available to media.
Thompson is available for media interviews relative to this story.
Photos from the trip also are available for use by media.
As the number-one engine that powers South Africa, Anglo American is both shaping and being shaped by the economic, social and political forces forming the new South Africa. The outcome will affect the American -- and world -- jewelry market.
POSSIBLE ANGLES THAT THOMPSON CAN ADDRESS
-- BUSINESS ANGLE: For American jewelers and American consumers of jewelry products, the shape that South Africa and Anglo take is more than just a dramatic headline.
Anglo American is the most important company in the jewelry world. American jewelers know Anglo best through De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. Anglo and De Beers are sister companies, twin pillars of the Oppenheimer empire. Through the De Beers cartel, Anglo controls the production and sale of 80 percent of the world's diamonds. Through De Beers' London-based Central Selling Organization, Anglo spends nearly $150 million a year promoting diamonds to consumers. Anglo also is the world's largest gold producer and, thorugh associate companies, the world's largest platinum producer.
-- POLITICAL ANGLE: What are the chances that an African National Congress-led government will come to power? Will it nationalize the gold, diamond and platinum mines? Will the ANC break up the Anglo American conglomerate? Can Anglo American survive under black majority rule?
TO REACH THOMPSON: Thompson can be reached at Modern Jeweler offices Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST. Phone 913-451-2200. Modern Jeweler editorial offices are located in Overland Park, Kan. Offices of the publisher of Modern Jeweler, Tim Murphy, are located in New York City at 212-682-7777.
