NOTES FROM THE FIELD.
The International Center of Photography in New York City has
announced the public phase of its $11 million Capital Campaign to fund
the center's move from its historic location on Fifth Avenue to a
larger building at its midtown site at 43rd St. The expansion will
enable more exhibitions, events and educational programs. The expanded
galleries are scheduled to re-open in the fall of 2000 and the school
and administrative offices will be ready by September 2001. For

Photographic Arts (MoPA) in San Diego has appointed its first film
curator, Chicago-based educator, historian and filmmaker Scott Marks.
Marks's duties will include the management and programming of a new
state-of-the-art 238-seat theater at MoPA. The theater is named in honor
of Joan and Irwin Jacobs, who donated $1 million to help fund the
renovation and expansion of MoPA's existing space to four times its
former capacity. The theater will host all genres of film and video wor
k--domestic and foreign, historic and contemporary, fiction and
documentary, and adult and children's--as well as provide a venue
for festivals, lectures, visiting artists and industry professionals and
other special events. This new position as film curator in a photography
museum is only the second of its kind--the first being at the George
Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester,
NY....The editors of the much-missed High Performance Magazine, Linda
Frye Burnham and Steven Durland, are now producing APINews, a newsletter
focusing on community-based art, which includes extensive news,
commentary and a variety of resources/links to related sites of
interest. APINews is being produced in both print and in an on-line form
that can be found at www.communityarts.net/api....The Society for
Contemporary Photography (SCP) has chosen Kathy Aron as its first
Director. SCP, located in Kansas City, MO, is a non-profit organization
that was formerly managed by volunteer members and a small staff of
part-time employees. Aron's duties will include primary curatorial
responsibilities and general oversight of SCP's activities, which
include educational and exhibition programming, audience development and
fundraising. Aron most recently served as Vice President of Exhibitions
on the Board of Directors for the SCP.
