All-Star Game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games . He'll be replaced by Detroit Pistons guard Joe Dumars.

``The smart thing would be for me to sit out,'' Mourning said. ``It's very disappointing to me because I would have had the opportunity to start, and it's a great honor.''

Mourning, chosen as a reserve on the Eastern Conference team, was expected to start in place of Patrick Ewing, who will miss the game because of a groin injury.

Mourning is hobbled by tendinitis in his right heel.

Mourning is the fifth player who says he can't play in the contest Sunday. The West will be without Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler and Shaquille O'Neal.

``It's a nuisance more than anything,'' he said. ``It's something I need to stay off of and get better. It's important to do what's best for myself and the Heat.''

Mourning, who has missed just two games this season, leads the Heat in scoring and rebounds. He expects to return to action for Miami's next game, Tuesday against Detroit.

Dumars, a 12-year veteran, will appear in his sixth All-Star Game.

Drexler grounded: Houston Rockets All-Star guard Clyde Drexler is expected to miss four to six weeks with a ``moderately severe'' left hamstring sprain sprain, stretching or wrenching of the ligaments and tendons of a joint, often with rupture of the tissues but without dislocation. Sprains occur most commonly at the ankle, knee, or wrist joints, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the involved joint. .

Drexler, placed on the injured list Thursday, aggravated the injury in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night's loss to the New York New York, state, United States

The club said Drexler will receive daily treatment and will be closely monitored by team physicians. The 10-time All-Star has played in 44 games this season, averaging 18.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and a team-leading 5.7 assists.

Will he or won't he? Jayson Williams has reconsidered his decision to have probable season-ending surgery on his right thumb and decided to keep playing for the New Jersey Nets.

The NBA's second-leading rebounder reversed his decision on Wednesday, just 24 hours after informing the team he was worried about his future because of the tendon injury.

``As long as my thumb is attached to my hand, I'm going to keep playing,'' Williams said before the Nets' game with Indiana on Thursday night. ``That's what I get paid to do. I can't sit on the sidelines On the sidelines

. Everyone is rushing to get me cut.''

Williams, averaging 14.8 points and 14.9 rebounds, seemed anxious to have the surgery on Tuesday, noting that Dr. Charles Melone Jr., would probably do it on Monday.

``It's my decision to play,'' Williams said. ``If anything happens and there is a permanent injury, there's no one to blame but myself.''

The return of Nelson: Don Nelson, living off money from the New York Knicks while living in Maui since being fired last March, is on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer.
