NOTES : INDIANA GUARD GETS UNKNIGHTED.Byline: Daily News Wire Services Indiana guard Neil Reed said he will not return for his senior season to play for coach Bob Knight, who he said made it clear the junior was no longer welcome in his program. ``If the choice were mine, I would have returned to Indiana University,'' Reed said in a statement. ``But . . . coach Knight has made it clear that in making those decisions about my future, he is accountable to no one.'' In the days since the season-ending loss to Colorado in the NCAA tournament's East Regional, Knight told Reed on Friday he would not play next season for the Hoosiers, Knight and Reed said. The coach said the junior did not measure up to his standards of leadership, Reed said. ``Coach Knight has created a different set of rules for me,'' Reed said in a statement faxed from the Adams & Reese law firm in New Orleans. ``Leadership requires respect. I have not been given any respect for three years.'' Duke aide moves: Tommy Amaker, part of Duke's run of seven Final Four appearances over nine years as a player and an assistant coach, was hired as Seton Hall coach. Amaker, 31, replaced George Blaney, who was fired earlier this month after compiling a 38-48 record over three seasons, including 10-18 this year. Cow curtailed: Authorities raided a $160-million-a-year gambling operation in New York and Philadelphia and arrested 25 people, timing the sweep to coincide with heavy betting on the NCAA Tournament. The raids, code-named Slam Dunk, targeted ``the mob's cash cow, illegal sports betting,'' Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes said. Raise for Gamecocks coach: Eddie Fogler, pursued by Ohio State and Rutgers after guiding South Carolina to its best basketball season in a quarter-century, got a $100,000 raise to stay with the Gamecocks. The school exercised its annual rollover of Fogler's five-year contract, taking it through the 2001-2002 season, with a section outlining the additional pay. ``Eddie Fogler will be our coach well into the next century,'' athletic director Mike McGee said. He would not disclose specifics. A school official who asked not to be identified said the agreement will boost Fogler's annual salary to $130,000, an increase of $10,000. The rest of the additional money will come from radio and TV revenues, the source said. Fogler's total package would be worth approximately $590,000. The executive committee of the school's board of trustees will meet by telephone today to discuss approving the deal. ``I appreciate the confidence, support and commitment the administration has put forth toward our basketball program,'' Fogler said. ``Our program has made significant progress and we look forward to next season,'' he said. |
