NOTES : CHATSWORTH'S WILSON HEADED TO UC IRVINE.Byline: Daily News Chatsworth High School All-City volleyball player Chris Wilson has signed a national letter of intent with UC Irvine. Wilson, a 6-foot-6 middle blocker, led Chatsworth to a second-place finish in the Northwest Valley Conference this past season. On hold: Pepperdine pitcher Randy Wolf, a second-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies, still has not signed. He did not accept the Phillies' first contract offer. Another honor for Garland:Former Kennedy pitcher Jon Garland was selected first-team All-American by Baseball America magazine. Valent hitting well: UCLA outfielder Eric Valent is one of the top hitters for Team USA this summer. Valent is batting .421 with four home runs. Team USA will play two exhibition games at USC next week, facing the Korean National team on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. USC coach Mike Gillespie is an assistant coach. USC's Eric Munson is also on the team. All-Star Game:The Antelope Valley All-Star Football Game will be played tonight at 7:30 at Palmdale High. It brings together top recent high school graduates from the Antelope Valley. Rugby: The Eagle Rock Athletic Club will host the 16th annual Eagle Rock 7-a-side Rugby Championship Tournament July 19 at the John Ferraro Athletic Fields in Griffith Park. Signing: Ramon Serratos, who helped Glendale College to the 1995 state Junior College championship, has signed a letter of intent to attend Lubbock Lubbock, city (1990 pop. 186,206), seat of Lubbock co., NW Tex.; inc. 1909. In the Llano Estacado region on a branch of the Brazos River, it was settled in 1879 by Quakers. It is the trade center for the cotton- and grain-growing Great Plains region of Texas and E New Mexico. Its manufactures include cottonseed oil, earth-moving and irrigation equipment, and pumps. Food and dairy products are produced, and there are wineries. Christian. Serratos placed third in the steeplechase in the state track championships as a freshman at College of the Canyons in 1995 before transferring to Glendale for his sophomore season. A two-time Western State Conference champion in the steeplechase and 10,000 meters at Canyons and Glendale College, Serratos chose Lubbock Christian over NAIA rival Life College. |
