NOTES : BURROUGHS ASSISTANT KNOOP PROMOTED TO HEAD COACH.

Keith Knoop, an assistant football coach at Burroughs High School in Burbank for the past four seasons, was named head coach Friday.

Knoop, 33, replaces Robert dos Remedios, who resigned in November after three years as head coach. A graduate of Burbank High School, Knoop was the Indians defensive coordinator under dos Remedios. He previously served as defensive line coach at Glendale College between 1988 and 1993.

Knoop's appointment won't become official until it gets approval from the school district board in February.

Releaguing: The High Desert League is considering a move to abandon the CIF Southern Section and join the Central Section made up primarily of schools from the Bakersfield and Fresno area.

A league vote scheduled for Thursday was postponed to give the superintendents from Desert and Rosamond high schools more time to consider the move. The league is made up of Paraclete, Bishop, Desert, Kern Valley, Mojave and Rosamond.

Paraclete officials said Friday if the league votes to leave the Southern Section, their school will not join them. It would try to join the Alpha League.

Basketball tournament: The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Challenge will take place Monday at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. There are nine games scheduled, starting at 9:30 a.m. Featured games: Harvard-Westlake vs. Fairfax at 8 p.m.; Dominguez vs. Crenshaw at 6:30 p.m.; and Inglewood vs. Crossroads at 6 p.m. Admission is $8 adults, $6 students.

Softball tryouts: The Fever 14-and-under ASA travel softball team will hold tryouts Sunday at Alemany High School. Information: (818) 420-9645.

Baseball registration: San Val Little League will be holding registration today and Sunday for players ages 5 to 15. Sylmar Independent Baseball League is also holding signups today and Sunday for the spring season.
