Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, Stealth, a class ``A'' 12-and-under softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies' team, is holding tryouts Sept. 6. Soccer: The Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, United Soccer Club, a girls' 15-and-under gold-division club team, is holding tryouts this month. Softball: The Southern California Shilos girls ``A'' softball team is holding tryouts for its 14-, 16- and 18-and-under softball teams.
