NOTES: RAIDERS WANT VINDICATION IN PLAYOFF OPENER SATURDAY.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

At least part of Sean Roche's goals were fulfilled. The season didn't go exactly as planned for the first-year coach of the Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  men's soccer team, but his Raiders did qualify for the playoffs.

After losing their last Western State Conference game 5-1 to Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  on Tuesday, the Raiders had to wait until Wednesday night to learn their fate. Moorpark (14-9-3, 5-5) earned a berth in the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. ``It'll be a chance to vindicate ourselves a little bit,'' Roche said.

The Raiders won twice as many games as last year's team that went 7-8-2 and 2-5-1 in conference, but Roche had higher hopes for the revamped lineup. After a quick start, Moorpark lost four of its last six games.

``I think if we were to focus for an extended period of time, we could be very good,'' Roche said. ``We had a hard time concentrating on soccer for an entire game (Tuesday). There have been other distractions and I think it has something to do with our immaturity, with our youth.''

Santa Barbara scored twice in the first 10 minutes and the Raiders couldn't recover against the conference's second-place team despite a strong second half.

``Santa Barbara, you could tell they'd been to a championship game and wanted to get back,'' Roche said. ``They played a perfect game.''

Cross country: The Raiders are peaking at the right time. ``It's not because we're bad or we're not playing well,'' coach Steve Burkhart said. ``The other teams we're playing are just doing really well. As far as we're concerned, it's just a tough division. We've got a good team this year, but we're in a tough division.''

The division's top three teams entered the week with a combined three losses in Northern Division play. A rule change allowing more than three teams from a division in the playoffs doesn't go into effect until next season.

The play of Heidi Ferguson and Dani Upmeyer continue to be bright spots for the Raiders.
