The first weekend of the high school softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies' season starts today with the 14-team pool-play Hart Classic. Action begins today at 9 a.m. at four different fields - Hart vs. El Camino Real (at Newhall Park), Sylmar vs. Highland (at Hart High's upper field), Valencia vs. Santa Monica (Valencia High) and Canyon vs. Granada Hills (Valencia High). Games continue at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The tournament concludes next Saturday. ``It's a strong tournament,'' said Harvard-Westlake assistant coach Toni Brown. ``We like the tournament.
