NOTES: HART HIGH SOFTBALL TOURNEY OPENS TODAY.

Let the games begin.

The first weekend of the high school softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  season starts today with the 14-team pool-play Hart Classic.

Pool A has Hart, El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

 and Ventura. Pool B is Sylmar, Highland and Hoover. Pool D is Canyon, Granada Hills, Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill and Westlake.

Action begins today at 9 a.m. at four different fields - Hart vs. El Camino Real (at Newhall Park), Sylmar vs. Highland (at Hart High's upper field), Valencia vs. Santa Monica (Valencia High) and Canyon vs. Granada Hills (Valencia High).

Games continue at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The tournament concludes next Saturday.

``It's a strong tournament,'' said Harvard-Westlake assistant coach Toni Brown. ``We like the tournament. Last year was our first year in it and it's always good competition to start the season off.''
