NOTES: BIRDS OF PARADISE FLY OFF WITH SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP.

The Birds of Paradise, an 8-10-year-old girls' soccer team, won the Area 10E championship, going undefeated in four games and allowing only one goal.

The Area 10E included the cities of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. , Malibu, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Newbury Park and Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

The Birds of Paradise were undefeated during the year, scoring 27 goals and allowing four.

They will compete in a section tournament for AYSO AYSO American Youth Soccer Organization
AYSO All Your Saturdays Occupied
AYSO Alabama Youth Soccer Organization
AYSO Albuquerque Youth Soccer Organization (Albuquerque, New Mexico) 
 against teams from Bakersfield and the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.

The Birds of Paradise are coached by Gary Rosen and assisted by Fred Kleinzweig, Phil Stenkowski and Mike Clark.

Volleyball: The Conejo Recreation and Park District Sports Office is accepting applications for the Adult Winter/Spring Volleyball league.

The coed volleyball league plays Sunday and Wednesday evenings, Feb. 7 through May, at the Thousand Oaks and Bouchard Community Center.

League fees are $191 for in-district and $229 for out-district teams (includes a $36 refundable forfeit To lose to another person or to the state some privilege, right, or property due to the commission of an error, an offense, or a crime, a breach of contract, or a neglect of duty; to subject property to confiscation; or to become liable for the payment of a penalty, as the result of a  fee).

The league is open to ages 16 and up and offers B, C and D divisions. Register at the Crowley House/Sports Office.

Softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies' : The So Cal Commotion, an 14-and-under girls' fastpitch softball Fastpitch softball is a sport played commonly by girls, though male and co-ed fastpitch leagues also exist. The United States fastpitch softball team has won back-to-back-to-back gold medals at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics.  team, is holding tryouts for the 1999 season on Jan. 23 and 24.

On the 23rd, the tryouts will be at Camarillo High and on the 24th at Mission Oaks Park in Camarillo. Both tryouts are from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The Commotion plays in all 14-and-under qualifiers and nationals in July and August and will also play in 16-and-under tournaments after the high school season.

Softball: The Ballistic, an 16-and-under traveling softball team, is holding its annual tryouts for the upcoming season.

Tryouts take place Saturday from 9-11:30 a.m.

The Ballistic competed in more than 100 games last year throughout various cities and states, including the AFA AFA

Diving: Dive Thousand Oaks has openings for both the boys' and girls' diving teams.

The age limit is 7-17. High school students can get a jump on the season.

Divers learn the fundamentals of spring-board diving with competitions in age groups. This is a year-round U.S. Diving program.

Little League: Registration for the spring season continues every Saturday and Sunday in January from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Simi Valley Little League complex on Royal Avenue at Darrah Street.
