NOTEBOOK: UCD HELPS `FILL A VOID'.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

DAVIS Davis, city (1990 pop. 46,209), Yolo co., central Calif.; settled in the 1850s, inc. 1917. It is an education center with light industry; machinery, processed foods, and computer equipment are produced. The extensive Univ.  - UC Davis coach Bob Biggs couldn't be in a better situation.

He's in his ninth season as head coach at UC Davis, one of the most successful Division II programs in the country with a Division II-best 31 consecutive winning seasons.

If that wasn't enough, the school is planning to build a new $23.5 million stadium by 2004. It's an upgrade from the current 10,000-seat Toomey Field Toomey Field is a 10,111-seat multi-purpose stadium in Davis, California. It opened in 1949 and was home to the University of California, Davis Aggies football team through the 2006 season. The first game, on November 18, 1949 was a 12-3 victory over Chico State. .

Biggs doesn't have to worry about the stability of the nonscholarship football program at Davis. But that doesn't mean he's not concerned about Cal State Northridge's football program, which could be eliminated next month.

``It's a sad statement of college football in California,'' Biggs said. ``There's nowhere for kids to play if a young man doesn't get a scholarship. I know Northridge has relied heavily on junior-college players. After two years, a young man wants to move on and play four-year football someplace some·place

, there's getting to be nowhere to play.''

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  hasn't eliminated football yet but many coaches already are talking as though it's a done deal.

CSUN athletic director Dick Dull recommended the program be cut to balance the budget. President Jolene Koester will make a decision by Thanksgiving.

Biggs is pleased Davis' football program fills a need in Northern California.

``We fill a void and niche in California,'' Biggs said. ``Our kids, academically, are very, very strong. Kids that are looking for Looking for

or Berkeley to play, we can fill that niche for them. Those are the kind of kids that we get.

``We're not scholarship, so we sell academics. That's what our focus is all about.''

So too is a winning football tradition. Aggies football is so popular, UC Davis students passed a referendum to foot the bill for part of the state-of-the-art stadium, which will seat up to 18,000.
