There was one friendly rivalry. USC wide receiver Steve Smith and Cal cornerback Daymeion Hughes were also talking, but it never got out of hand.

``Hughes and I went at it but we respect each other,'' Smith said. ``We've played against each other since high school.''

Cal surprised USC by having Hughes, who leads the nation with eight interceptions, cover Smith.

``We thought they would have Hughes cover Jarrett,'' offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin said.

Double cover: Cal coach Jeff Tedford said USC double-covered DeSean Jackson the entire game.

``They had (Brian) Cushing on him, guys on top of him, trying to jam him, guys dropping underneath,'' Tedford said. ``We didn't put together two halves. To just hang in there is not what we were shooting for. We didn't play well enough to sustain drives.''

Jackson said USC had ``linebackers, safeties and cornerbacks all over me. I figured they would use me as a decoy DECOY. A pond used for the breeding and maintenance of water-fowl. 11 Mod. 74, 130; S. C. 3 Salk. 9; Holt, 14 11 East, 571.  to open it up for others.''

Still confident: Cal tailback Marshawn Lynch did not sound like his team lost afterward.

``Cal is on the rise,'' he said. ``This year, they got us. Next year is a different year. We've got a lot of young players who got a taste and next year will be hungry.''

Five straight: USC won an unprecedented fifth straight Pac-10 title and the announced attendance of 91,672 was the 11th straight home crowd more than 90,000.

USC coach Pete Carroll is 63-11 as head coach and won 54 of his past 57 games.

Local watch: Moorpark High tailback Darrell Scott was among the recruits in the USC locker room.
