Darren Schwartz of Westlake High and Brett Kanda of Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge are the latest area entries in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which has included six area qualifiers since 1999. ``I just know Brett works hard at his game, has excellent organizational skills, and his sense of priorities is very good. He's going to be the kind of kid that will get more kids into golf, and some of them are going to want to go to Flintridge Prep.''

Kanda entered the Junior Amateur on a hot streak. He averaged 71.5 strokes in his past five tournaments, placing among the top five scorers in four of them.

Waldorf shared the lead after each of the first two rounds at Muirfield Golf Course in Gullane, Scotland, and finished 67-69-77-69-283 to tie for 18th place, thanks as much to terrific perseverance in a third-round storm as to his hot start.

The former Taft High of Woodland Hills standout, named 1985 College Player of Year while at UCLA, struggled with the rest of the field in wind-chill temperatures that dipped into the 30s on Saturday, when winds gusting to 25 mph had rain blowing sideways.

He endured four bogeys and two double bogeys on the front nine that day but regrouped with five back-nine birdies to climb back into contention in conditions eventual winner Ernie Els called the toughest he had faced in a tournament.
