NOTEBOOK: RAIN DAMPENS CROWD'S INTEREST.

Byline: JILL PAINTER Staff Writer

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  -- Usually, fans are jockeying for position and sprinting to the next hole in an effort to get a better view of Tiger Woods Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled. . But about an hour into his round Saturday, fans were scrambling for the exits and lining up for the shuttles to take them away from Sherwood Country Club.

Heavy rain fell much earlier than weather forecasts had predicted during the third round of the Target World Challenge. The rain was expected to start late in the afternoon, giving the field a good chance to finish before the showers started.

 while finishing their round.

``Overall, it is what it is,'' Woods said. ``You deal with it. You miss the ball in the correct spots, and you can get up-and-down or you can make birdies.''

Chris DiMarco Christian Dean DiMarco (born August 23, 1968) is an American golfer who plays on the PGA Tour, and has been in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings.

DiMarco was born in Huntington, New York. He attended University of Florida and turned professional in 1990.

by one shot, isn't one to be preoccupied with weather conditions.

``It really doesn't matter,'' he said. ``If you're worried about the weather the night before, then you're not going to sleep well, you're not going to put yourself (in a good position). You wake up and see what it's like.''

DiMarco went to the Lakers See Lake poets  game Friday night instead of sitting home watching the local weather report.

``I wish I was a weather man, because they've got the best job in the world. Thirty percent right all the time, and it's great,'' said DiMarco, who will play in the final group today.

Ask any weather forecaster, and they'd probably want DiMarco's job. He's made $5 million on tour the past twoyears, and that's not counting sponsor money. The winner of the Target World Challenge will receive $1.35 million.

Forecasts call for a slight chance of rain today. During the week, forecasts had called for rain today, prompting questions about what would happen if the course was unplayable or rain suspended play. With all the international players in the field and offseason vacations planned, it would be next to impossible to extend the tournament to Monday.

Saturday, a conservative approach was the norm for playing in the rain.

``You just want to keep yourself in the golf tournament as opposed to going the other way, especially on a day like today,'' Ogilvy said.

Woods seemed to think the course played a lot longer because of the rain.

He hit a 3-wood and 3-iron into the par-4 fourth hole Saturday. During the sunny first and second rounds, he hit a 5-wood and six- or 7-iron.

``Around here, when it's raining, you try to miss it in the right spots,'' DiMarco said.

On the first hole, a group of about 10 fans went under the rope lining the fairway and stood near volunteers and security personnel to get a better view of Woods and his approach shot. They acted like they belonged there until a volunteer noticed they didn't have badges and escorted them back to the gallery.

On one hole, just before Woods was about to hit, a little girl said loudly: ``Daddy, can I have a Churro chur·ro

The Target World Challenge has drawn 40,112 fans so far, the largest attendance figure through the third round in the tournament's seven-year history. A record attendance of 51,205 was set last year.
