Futural was disqualified from first to third. Aptitude and jockey Laffit Pincay became the winners, and Skimming was placed second.

McCarron has never won the Gold Cup, Hollywood Park's marquee race, in 19 tries.

McCarron will be allowed to ride Penamacor in Saturday's Bel Air Handicap at Hollywood Park. The Bel Air is one of the races designated as exceptions to jockeys' suspensions.

--Rematch? When Skimming tries to win a second consecutive Pacific Classic on Aug. 19, he'll have to deal with Futural again.

Those two Gold Cup horses are heading to Del Mar for their next starts and might use the July 29 San Diego Handicap The San Diego Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. Gold Cup winner Aptitude will make his next start in the Saratoga Breeders' Cup Handicap at Saratoga racetrack on Aug. 19, said trainer Bobby Frankel, who also has Skimming.

Meanwhile, Captain Steve will be shipped to Del Mar and race next in the Pacific Classic or the July 28 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga.

Futural trainer Craig Dollase looked at the bright side after the Gold Cup DQ.

``He came back good; that's the main thing,'' Dollase said. ``Two positives came out of the race. We know he can get a mile and a quarter and we know he can carry weight (124 pounds).''

--Monarchos injured: Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos has a fractured bone in his right knee and could be out of training for up to 60 days.

The injury was disclosed by trainer John Ward, who said the 3-year-old colt might be able to race in the Breeders' Cup at Belmont Park on Oct. 27.

Ward described the injury as a subchondral hairline fracture hairline fracture

--`It's bogus': Trainer Bob Baffert said he hopes his appeal of a suspension for a positive drug test on one of his horses forces changes in California racing rules.

Baffert had his 60-day suspension stayed by a Superior Court judge after California Horse Racing Board chairman Robert Tourtelot denied the trainer's request. The stay is in effect while Baffert pursues an appeal.

``The ones that know me know it's bogus, but it hurts racing for people that don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
,'' Baffert told the Associated Press' Beth Harris. ``They could overturn it tomorrow, but the damage has been done.''
