``The trenches are rough the whole time, and this game was extra rough,'' said Leisle, who made four tackles. ``It was a bad situation. I shouldn't have done it. It screws up the team.''

Leisle said it was in retaliation to a hit he received from an Aztecs player.

(Leisle) was probably the last one who got caught. It's going to be a huge penalty against us, especially going into next week.''

--Tight spot: UCLA tight end Keith Carter Keith Carter (June 3, 1948, Madison, Wisconsin) is an influential American photographer, educator, and artist noted for his dreamlike photos of people, animals and objects.  was hoping to be back from a motorcycle accident in time for the Pacific-10 Conference opener, but it doesn't appear he is ready.

``It's healing but he still has some tightness in the joint,'' Dorrell said. ``Some days he feels real good and some days he gets some spasms in the area. We're going to make sure he's had a long succession of no symptoms occurring where he can't go. That might be awhile.''

Carter was listed as the starter in spring ball, but is yet to play. Moreover, Blane Kezirian missed Saturday's game against San Diego State with an ankle injury and Marcedes Lewis played despite a shoulder injury. J.J. Hair was the only other tight end available, which forced the Bruins to use backup offensive lineman Shane Lehmann in a reserve role.

--BCA interest: Officials from the Black Coaches Association contacted the UCLA athletic department this past week about playing in its showcase game in August next season, and the school is examining the possibility.
