NOTEBOOK: INJURED SHORTSTOP PEREZ QUESTIONABLE FOR PLAYOFFS.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Special to the Daily News

LANCASTER - Injured JetHawks shortstop Kenny Perez, who hasn't played since suffering a right ankle sprain ankle sprain Orthopedics A stretching of the ankle ligaments and/or muscles with swelling  in an Aug. 25 game against Bakersfield, is questionable for the Sept. 7-9 divisional miniseries against High Desert.

JetHawks manager Bill Plummer William Francis Plummer (born March 21, 1947 in Oakland, CA) was a catcher for the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and the Seattle Mariners. While never a regular player (he was Johnny Bench's backup catcher during the Big Red Machine years), he did play solid defense.  learned his status was downgraded late Wednesday after trainer Adam Weyer told him that Perez hasn't regained the range of motion in his injured ankle that he'd hoped to see at this stage of his rehab.

``He's just not progressing as quickly as we'd hoped,'' Plummer said.

Perez was batting .320 (31 for 97) since coming to Lancaster in early August. Plummer believes Perez's defense and leadership were integral factors in leading the JetHawks to a stretch in which they won 15 of 19 games that helped them secure a wild-card playoff berth.

Plummer said it's ``highly doubtful'' Perez would play anytime before the playoffs begin, as he'd originally hoped. He nevertheless is holding out hope Perez might still be able to play in next week's miniseries, even it's just one or two games.

``It just depends on how well he progresses, but right now he can't rotate on that ankle,'' Plummer said. ``Straight away, he's OK, but then when he starts turning or tries to cut he's having problems. Shortstops have got too many angles they've got to take.''

Danny Richar Danny Adam Richar (born June 9, 1983 in La Romana, Dominican Republic) is a Major League Baseball second baseman who plays for the Chicago White Sox.

Richar originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 9, 2001.
, a fourth-year JetHawks player who's been a shortstop most of his career, will fill in for Perez. Richar struggled defensively at shortstop the first two months of the season before moving to second base, a position he's excelled at and where he's clearly more comfortable.

``That's almost a week away, so we'll just have to re-evaluate his condition when we get to that point.''

``I'd rather have that double-play combination with (Richar) at second and Kenny at short,'' Plummer said. ``But if that soreness doesn't go away then (Perez isn't) going to be his best anyway.''

--Playoff possibilities: Lancaster (35-31 in the second half, 72-64 overall) is within 2 1/2 games of first-place High Desert (38-29 74-63) in the second-half title race going into Friday's three-game series opener between the teams.

The JetHawks conclude regular-season play on Monday, when they play host to Lake Elsinore at 7 p.m. High Desert concludes regular-season play against Lancaster on Sunday. Lancaster can win the title by winning its four remaining games. If the JetHawks sweep High Desert but lose to Lake Elsinore, High Desert would still win the title based on head-to-head results.

High Desert would have home-field advantage in the best-of-three series, meaning it would host the second and if-necessary third games.

--Hurricane relief: The JetHawks will give free tickets to Monday night's regular-season finale against Lake Elsinore to anyone who shows proof of a financial contribution in any amount to the American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross.  Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund. Monday's game features a post-game fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.
