Louis Leo Holtz (born on January 6, 1937 in Follansbee, West Virginia) is an author, television commentator, motivational speaker, and former NCAA football head
 insists he's not a candidate to return to Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  as its football coach and recommended his son instead.

Holtz admitted, though, ``I can't say no to anything.''

Notre Dame contacted Holtz on Saturday, seeking advice on what coaches it might pursue after George O'Leary George O'Leary (born August 17, 1946 in New York City, New York) is the head football coach for the University of Central Florida. Before that, he served as the head coach at Georgia Tech and was briefly an assistant coach for the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL.  was forced to resign for lying on his resume five days after taking the job.

Holtz, speaking publicly for the first time since he talked with his old school, said Wednesday he wasn't in the running to return to Notre Dame, where he coached for 11 seasons and won the last national championship for the Irish in 1988.

``I'm not a candidate,'' Holtz said at a news conference as his team prepared to meet Ohio State in the Outback Bowl The Outback Bowl is an annual college football bowl game played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The bowl was first called the Hall of Fame Bowl from 1986 to 1994. The name "Outback" comes from the game's title sponsor, Outback Steakhouse.  in Tampa, Fla., on Jan 1. ``Nobody's called me from Notre Dame, talked to me or anything.''

But after O'Leary resigned Friday, Holtz's name was raised as a possible replacement.

Holtz said he told his wife, Beth, and Gamecocks athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Mike McGee that ``we haven't accomplished everything we want here. We have a lot of things to do.''

But ``I can't say no to anything,'' said Holtz, who often leaves the door open for other opportunities. ``I plan on being here. I'm very happy here.''

Also, being that Notre Dame never has had a black head coach in any sport, Rev. Jesse Jackson urged the Irish to start with football.

``They should consider one, at least put credible black coaches in the mix,'' Jackson said Wednesday. ``A university of that magnitude, if they were to hire an African-American coach, it would be a huge breakthrough.''

--MSU coach gets raise: Michigan State football coach Bobby Williams has been given a $50,000 raise and a two-year contract extension.

Williams, 43, will see his annual base salary raised to $214,800 in 2002. His total compensation package will exceed $500,000.

The move comes as Williams and his team, 6-5 this season, prepare for the Silicon Valley Classic bowl game against Fresno State on Dec. 31.

--CSUN moves: Cal State Northridge receiver Drew Amerson will transfer to Troy State (Alabama). Also, offensive lineman Isaac Aronson has committed to Oregon State and defensive back Kingsley Echema to Villanova.

Amerson, a junior, had 97 catches for 1,244 yards and five touchdowns. Troy State, which moves to Division I-A next season, played CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  this year.

Aronson, a sophomore, was a hot recruiting commodity and also made trips to Texas Tech, Kansas State and UNLV UNLV University of Nevada, Las Vegas . Echema started for the Matadors as a freshman cornerback.
