NOTEBOOK: GRANADA HILLS PICKS RIGHT TIME HIGHLANDERS HOT ENTERING SEMIS.

Byline: Sean Ceglinsky Staff Writer

No team in the high school hockey league at the Valencia Ice Station is hotter than the Granada Hills Highlanders, winners of six consecutive games heading into the June 1 playoffs.

``When we play as a team, we're capable of beating anyone,'' Highlanders coach Francine Dyke said as her team prepares for its semifinal game against the Valencia Vikings at 6:45 p.m.

The Highlanders feature three players - Justin Dyke, Robert Hashimoto and Mitch Sabo - in the top 10 in total points. And goalie Eric Diamond is fourth in the league with an 84 percent save percentage.

``We're excited for the playoffs,'' Justin Dyke said. ``We've got to step it up now, it's a two-game season. And when we get pumped and decide to play, we can tear it up.''

--Dangerous foe: If any team can slow the Highlanders, it's the Vikings, who won both meetings this season.

The Vikings received goals from four different players in a 4-3 victory, and four days later Robert Leo Leo, in astronomy

and Tyler Jones each contributed two goals in a 5-3 win.

The postseason, however, is different.

``It should be interesting,'' Vikings coach Steve Yarnall said. ``The game won't be low scoring by any means, but it will be close. They have some explosive players, but it comes down to us worrying about ourselves. When have opportunities in their zone we must capitalize on Cap´i`tal`ize on`

Leo, Michael Caprio and Jeff Onstead figure to have their fair share of those chances - each is among the top 10 in the league in points.

--Repeat? From the outset, the Saugus Centurions figured to be in the running to defend their league championship. ``I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and now we're going for it,'' Centurions coach Wade Williams Wade Andrew Williams (born December 24, 1961) is an American actor who currently has a starring role as Captain Brad Bellick on Fox's television series Prison Break.  said.

The seventh son of the 1st earl of Cork, he was educated at Eton and on the Continent and conducted most of his researches at his own laboratories at Oxford (1654–68) and London (1668–91).  Birney and Paco Avila form perhaps the best second line in the league.

, is tied for second with 11 assists, and Avila is more of a role player who has nine points in 10 games.

``I'm fortunate in many ways with this team,'' Williams said. ``Our second line is our power line because it's so much stronger than most of the others teams'. ''

--Sure to be challenged: Not only do the Northerners face the unenviable task of facing the defending champions in the playoff opener, but they also enter the postseason on a three-game losing streak.

The Northerners lost each game by just a goal.

``We've had a rash of bad luck lately,'' Northerners coach Dennis Gilbert Dennis Gilbert is professor and chair of sociology at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and has taught at the Universidad Catlica in Lima, Peru, Cornell University and joined Hamilton college in 1976.  said. ``This team isn't built around a superstar. Any one of them can be the man, but we have to work as a team to have a chance to win.

``The Centurions are the championship team and being the true champions that they are, they never quit. If we are to compete, we have to show that same resiliency. It comes down to whoever wants it more, that team will win.''
