NOTEBOOK: DESPITE STRUGGLES, DALY IS STILL A DRAW.

Tour's money list, he's still a big draw.

His golf game is not what usually attracts people, anyway. Daly was better known for his pending divorce, gambling debt and injuries the past season. At least Thursday, Daly found his old groove in the sport that made him famous.

Daly had seven birdies and shot a 3-under 69 following the first round of the Target World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club. Daly is in a tie for fourth, three shots behind leader Henrik Stenson Henrik Stenson (born 5 April 1976) is a Swedish golfer.

Stenson was born in Gothenburg. He turned professional in 1999 and the following year topped the money rankings on the second tier golf tour in Europe, the Challenge Tour.

Daly survived a roller coaster on the back nine in which he carded a bogey, birdie, double bogey Verb 1. double bogey - to shoot two strokes over par

That stretch was a portrait of his season.

``You know, business-wise, for me it's been great, but just the injuries killed me,'' Daly said. ``-- It was just one thing after another. I just really wasn't able to do the thing I needed to do to play well because I was hurting most of the year.''

Daly had back problems that were so severe he couldn't swing for weeks at a time. He also broke his pinkie. Daly played in 25 events, with just one top-25 finish. The former British Open and PGA Championship The PGA Championship (often referred to as the U.S. PGA Championship outside of North America) is an annual golf tournament conducted by the Professional Golfers Association of America as part of the PGA Tour.  winner lost his tour card.

In what must have been a humbling exercise, Daly wrote letters to every tournament requesting a sponsor exemption. It was no surprise that the exemptions started rolling in. He has about 19-20 sponsor exemptions for next year and said he'll play in 25 or 26 tournaments.

PGA Members can cash in on an unlimited number of exemptions, and Daly will do just that.

``Anywhere he goes, he brings one of the biggest galleries,'' Woods said. ``We're running a business here and we're trying to obviously make as much money as we possibly can to obviously put everything in the (Tiger Woods) Learning Center.''

As usual, Daly had another off-the-course surprise, too. His wife, Sherrie, was in his gallery. Daly's fourth wife, Sherrie, filed for divorce from John on Oct.17 and Daly filed for divorce the following day.

Less than two months later, the pair is together again.

``Yeah, I mean, we're working it out,'' Daly said. ``We love each other very much. We love each other just a little more than we hate each other, just like the book. We're trying to work things out. I think we will.''

Daly is trying to work out his back problem, too.

But he tweaked it again earlier this week.

``I'm loading (the car) and my bag, which is very light, and I pick up Sherrie's, and I just heard it go ... krrrrr,'' Daly said. ``It hurts. It's on the left side, which at least I can swing. If it was on the right side, it would be like earlier this year. It's not that sciatic nerve sciatic nerve

where you can't breathe. It's just sore, like a pulled muscle.''

Even if he finishes last, Daly will earn a $170,000 paycheck this week, which is nearly equal to what he earned all year on the PGA Tour The PGA Tour is an organization that operates the USA's main professional golf tours. It is headquartered in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, USA. Its name is officially rendered in all caps as “PGA TOUR".  ($192,134).

Off the course, Daly is doing work in course design and he has a new wine collection called ``John Daly Wines'' with names like ``The Fairway Range'' and ``The Perfect Round.''

They're expected in stores soon.

``It's good and it's cheap,'' Daly said.

But Daly's main business -- golf -- is what he's most interested in turning around next season.

Phil sighting: Phil Mickelson Philip Alfred Mickelson (born June 16, 1970) (nicknamed "Lefty" for his left-handed swing, even though he is otherwise right-handed), is an American professional golfer.  saw him in Mexico on Monday. Love and Mickelson are working on a private golf course project.

``There was a rumor of an In-and-Out Burger down there and a Krispy Kreme. He came to check it out,'' Love joked.

``No, we were working on a golf course project that we're both working on down there.

``I've got one under construction and he's going to do the second course with our (project). We're going to be the construction company, so we've got a big project going down there, part of a private club, which is very exciting down there. It's in Cabo.''

Also: ``Desperate Housewives'' star Kyle MacLachlan was among those in Tiger Woods' gallery. -- Woods isn't the only one who's asked for an autograph. His mom, Kultida Woods, was signing for fans. -- The galleries were small Thursday, with the exception of the one for Woods and Jose Maria Olazabal. Even Daly, who normally attracts lots of followers, and playing partner Colin Montgomerie didn't have many fans.
