NOTEBOOK: CAMBIOCORSA'S LOSS 1ST IN 9 STARTS.

Byline: KEVIN MODESTI Staff Writer

ARCADIA -- As often happens in the California Cup races, there were lots of upsets Saturday at Santa Anita Santa Anita may refer to:
  • Santa Anita Park in California, USA
  • Santa Anita, Mexico holy site in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico
, none bigger than an 18-1 shot knocking off the queen of the mountain.

While River's Prayer and jockey Clinton Potts were winning the $150,000 Cal Cup Distaff by a length over Tiz a Gem, the 3-10 favorite Cambiocorsa was coming home a punchless third, losing for the first time in nine starts on Santa Anita's 6 1/2-furlong hillside turf course.

Cambiocorsa carried a career-high 125 pounds, giving nine pounds to the winner and 13 to the runner-up.

``I think the weight hurt us a little bit, but we're very proud of her,'' trainer Doug O'Neill said. ``We knew she had to lose eventually.''

Another sentimental favorite lost when Moscow Burning, the all-time top-earning Cal-bred mare with $1,417,800, made her final career start and ran fourth to SpecialHeather in the $100,000 Cal Cup Distance Handicap.

Jockey banned: Carlos Bautista, who rides mostly at Los Alamitos Los Alamitos (lôs ăləmē`təs, lŏs), city (1990 pop. 11,676), Orange co., NE of Long Beach, S Calif., in a suburban area; inc. 1960. Los Alamitos Racetrack and U.S. military installations are nearby. , was suspended for one year Saturday for using an electrical device to stimulate a horse named Royal Medallion in warm-ups for FairplexPark's second race Sept. 24.

Bautista violated California rules concerning possession of contraband and animal welfare. At a two-day stewards hearing, he was not alleged to have used the device in the race, in which Royal Medallion finished third.

More racing: Another year will pass without cuts in the circuit's overstuffed o·ver·stuff
