NOTEBOOK: BREAK FOR GIMELSTOB GOLDSTEIN HURT, DEFAULTS TO EX-BRUIN IN QUARTERFINAL.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Paul Goldstein pulled out of his quarterfinal match against Justin Gimelstob because of tendinitis in his left foot Friday in the Mercedes-Benz Cup at UCLA's L.A. Tennis Center.

The match was called after just 11 minutes and Gimelstob ahead 3-1.

Goldstein's injury was the latest in a series of bad breaks for the tournament, plagued by top-seeded Andre Agassi's withdrawal (back injury), third-seeded Marcelo Rios' default (profanity Irreverence towards sacred things; particularly, an irreverent or blasphemous use of the name of God. --Add Gimelstob: Thursday's victory over Philippoussis wasn't the first time he's pulled off an important upset in Los Angeles. He surprised Patrick Rafter in the 1998 quarterfinals and defeated Agassi in the first round the year before.

Gimelstob faces Michael Chang in today's semifinal. It's the first time this year Gimelstob has reached a final four.

--Now the name fits: ``Lucky loser'' Lionel Roux, Agassi's replacement, had a nice run, making it all the way to Thursday's quarterfinal against France's Arnaud Clement before falling 6-3, 6-2.
