NOTEBOOK: BORNN TAKES OVER SAUGUS FOOTBALL.Byline: Daily News Jason Bornn is Saugus High's new football coach, replacing Ron Hilton, who resigned last month. Bornn, 32, is a former assistant at Village Christian in Sun Valley, Muir of Pasadena, Canyon and Occidental College. He has just three days to acquaint himself with the players at Saugus before the mandatory three-week summer break. Practice will resume Aug. 18, and the season opener will be Sept. 12 at Hilltop in Chula Vista. ``I couldn't ask for a better situation. Yes, there are time constraints, but I'll get done what needs to get done,'' he said. Saugus finished 2-8 last year, one of the worst seasons in school history. - Gerry Gittelson --Accomplishment: Junior wrestler Vlad Kockiev from Birmingham High of Lake Balboa accomplished what is considered unheard of for a City Section grappler when he not only competed, but finished second in the 130-pound class in the Junior Greco Roman finals in Fargo, N.D. Kochiev narrowly missed a shot at representing the United States in the Junior World Greco Championships when he lost Tuesday to A.J. Lavender of Illinois on a 3-point throw at the 3:03 mark near the end of the match. ``This is phenomenal for any wrestler, but for him to do this in the City Section is great for wrestling in our program,'' Birmingham coach Mat McClenahan said. - Nathan Brown |
