The Department of Fish and Game closed the statewide black bear hunting season Tuesday.

The season ended when the quota of 1,500 bears were harvested. It is the fifth consecutive year the harvest number was reached before the calendar closure, which was Dec. 30.

All tags, including those unfilled, must be returned to the DFG's Woldlife Branch, 1415 Ninth St., Sacramento, CA 95814, by Feb. 1. Those who bagged a bear must submit the skull to the DFG DFG Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Council)

--Snowboarding clinic offered: Girls and women will have a chance to learn how to snowboard when the Girls Learn To Ride holds a clinic Saturday at Mountain High.

Girls older than 9, and women, can learn to snowboard through a two-hour lesson session, a full-day lift ticket, snowboard and boot rental, a raffle of snowboarding gear and other items, including CDs. The cost is $29, of which $2 will go to the Boarding For Breast Cancer Fund, which will support breast cancer research.

Lessons will be at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. There also will be a Ladies Lounge, an action sports festival for young women and an after- party at the Bull Wheel Saloon and Restaurant.
