NOTE FROM JIM MARSHALL, U.S. EPA REGION 2, EXTERNAL PROGRAMS
 DIVISION DIRECTOR:
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will offer tours for the public of its 165-foot Ocean Survey Vessel (OSV), "OSV Peter W. Anderson" on Thursday, Aug. 13 and Friday, Aug. 14. This is the first time OSV Peter W. Anderson has been open to the public in the New York metropolitan area. The vessel will be open to the public at the North Cove Yacht Harbor, located at the World Financial Center (Battery Park City), New York City, NY, from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm on Aug. 13; and at Liberty State Park (north end), Jersey City, NJ from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm on Aug. 14.
Peter W. Anderson is part of a fleet of three research vessels owned by EPA. It is utilized to survey ocean conditions along the entire Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Tours will be given of the vessel's three on-board laboratories, and the crew and EPA staff will be available to answer questions on the ship's equipment. This equipment includes the three laboratories, several types of water and sediment sampling devices, a state-of-the-art side-scan sonar system, and a system to monitor water column characteristics.
This is an unique opportunity for the public to see some of the tools EPA utilizes to assess the impacts of pollution on our oceans in general, an area in which much research, like that being done by EPA, is needed. The media is encouraged to pass this information on to readers.
EPA will be sending a flyer and a press advisory to the press within the next couple of weeks.
