NOT LACKING A THING LACKEY, BULLPEN CONTROL YANKEES' LINEUP IN VICTORY ANGELS 6, N.Y. YANKEES 3.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - John Lackey John Derran Lackey (born October 23, 1978, in Abilene, Texas) is a major league baseball starting pitcher from Abilene, Texas. As his Angels teammates took the field for batting practice, the 6-foot-6 right-hander lounged on the clubhouse couch. One minute he'd glance at the names on the lineup card - Jeter, Sheffield, Rodriguez, Giambi, Matsui - and the next minute he'd flip from ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network  to MTV MTV

After all, Lackey didn't need to be perfect, not even against a lineup as good as the Yankees. Not when he has the support of one of the league's best bullpens.

On Friday, Lackey struggled with his command and lasted only 5 1/3 innings, but the bullpen shut down the Yankees for the final 3 2/3 innings in the Angels' 6-3 victory in front of 44,043 at Angel Stadium.

It marked the first time the Yankees have lost consecutive games since they lost four straight June 22-25.

Adam Kennedy's two-run single keyed a four-run second inning that helped build a lead for Lackey, who handed the ball to the bullpen with one out in the sixth.

``It's been something I've gotten used to the last three years,'' said Lackey, who improved to 8-4 after allowing three runs (two earned) and five hits. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Opposing batters are hitting .216 against the Angels' relievers, the lowest mark by hitters against any bullpen in the American League American League (AL)

``We definitely wouldn't be in the spot we're in (without the success of the bullpen),'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ``It's been a mainstay of what we've accomplished here the last three or four years, and before that with guys like Lee Smith and Percy (Troy Percival). They just keep taking the ball and doing their job.''

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the second after scoring a gift run. Alex Rodriguez began the inning with a single and took second when second baseman Kennedy went to first after fielding Hideki Matsui's grounder instead getting the lead runner.

Rodriguez advanced to third when catcher Jose Molina's pickoff pick·off

attempt sailed into center field, putting himself in position to score when Jason Giambi grounded out to first.

The Angels scored four in their half of the second, not with any help from third-base umpire Larry Young. The Angels had runners on first and second with nobody out when Maicer Izturis hit a line drive that clearly kicked up chalk on the left-field line. Young ruled the ball foul.

Izturis drew a walk, and Kennedy's bases-loaded single scored the Molina brothers, Bengie and Jose, Jose getting in with a nifty slide around the tag of catcher Jorge Posada.

Chone Figgins drove in the third run of the inning with a single, driving Kennedy to third. Kennedy then scored when Leiter tried to pick off Figgins at first and threw the ball away.

The Angels increased their lead to 5-1 in the third on Jose Molina's RBI RBI

single, but the Yankees, who began the night tied with Boston for the league lead in runs scored, began chipping away at the Angels' lead.

Matsui had an RBI single in the fourth to cut the Angels' lead to 5-2, and Robinson Cano delivered an RBI double in the fifth to make it 5-3.

In the sixth, Lackey gave up a leadoff single to Rodriguez, then fell behind 3-0 in the count to Matsui. The Japanese star helped Lackey out, swinging on the 3-0 pitch and popping out to center. That was Lackey's 101st and final pitch of the night, and Donnelly came in to face the red-hot Giambi, striking him out.

``You have to set the path for the closer,'' Scioscia said. ``As many games are lost in the seventh and eighth as there are in the ninth. The way we set up, we need three closers, and we feel we do with Brendan, Shields and Frankie.''
