NOT JUST HORSIN' AROUND; RIDERS GEAR UP FOR SAUGUS SHOW.

Byline: Mary Schubert Daily News Staff Writer

Kathy Annotti put Simply Stated through his paces Wednesday, not too long after running Quantum around the jump course.

For the Agoura resident, riding the two horses in quick succession is all a matter of woman and beast instinctively meshing their styles and finding out how to get in sync, she said.

``It's kind of like knowing what a Porsche drives like and what a Volkswagen drives like,'' Annotti explained. ``The better rider you are, the faster you figure it out.''

The self-described city girl from Canada said she has always been drawn to horses and equestrian sports. ``It's just in your blood,'' she said.

This weekend she will join equestrians from all over Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  who will demonstrate their trotting and jumping skills in a horse show and competition on the 65-acre grounds of L.A.R.C. Ranch in Bouquet Canyon.

The ninth annual Camelot Classic Weekend of Champions has events for several age groups, and the varied skill levels of horses and riders. The event, sponsored by Camelot Riding Club in Newhall, is taking place for the first time at the rural spread owned by the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Retarded Citizens Foundation, said Kathleen Sturkey, a L.A.R.C. Ranch staffer.

Although the 39-year-old ranch is home to nearly 100 developmentally disabled adults, the nonprofit foundation periodically leases out its grounds to generate income.

On the horse-show circuit, riders can compete in events virtually every week of the year in towns all over California, said Raizy Goffman, owner of the Camelot Riding Club. The Camelot Classic is one of those stops, an event sanctioned by the 375-member San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

On Wednesday, trainers took horses on dry runs through four equestrian rings set up at the entry to the ranch. It was a day to familiarize the animals with the gates they would jump over and the feel of the track's loose-packed sand.

``I'm on a horse I've only been riding for two weeks,'' she said of Mardi Gras, a 13-year-old gelding gelding

. ``Horses have certain ways that they like to be ridden. I need to pay attention to how he likes to be ridden.''

Dallis, a Northridge resident, said she always has connected with horses. ``My mom would take me to the pony rides, and I would watch the big (equestrian) shows on TV,'' she said. ``I just started taking lessons when I was 6 or 7, and I kept going from there.''

Kermit Samples, who owns a stable in Chatsworth, was one of the few riders on a female horse. ``I took this horse out of a back yard a year ago - never had done a jump in her life,'' he said of Up At Dawn, a 10-year-old mare. ``I saw her willingness to learn new things. You can see her alertness. She's very sharp.

``I've been riding all my life. I grew up on a ranch in Texas,'' Samples said.

Most equestrian events call for execution of required skills with a level of panache and finesse, noted trainer Cyndi Merrit, who works at the 600-acre Middle Ranch in Lake View Terrace. ``It's a very meticulous sport,'' the Burbank resident added, noting equestrian events have a long, tradition-laden history evident in everything from the helmets, coats, riding breeches and knee-high boots to the athletic decorum DECORUM.
