NOT FAIR! NO MIDWAY AVAILABLE ON OPENING DAY.

Byline: Krystn Shrieve Staff Writer

VENTURA - Carnival rides will not be running when the Ventura County Fair gates open today, but officials promise there will be plenty to keep visitors busy - from stock car competitions to pig races and the water balloon A water balloon, or water bomb is a simple small latex rubber balloon filled with water. ``There will certainly be some people who are disappointed because there's something festive about the sound of the carnival,'' Raley said. ``But we'll still have a full plate.''

The fair, which will run through Aug. 13, is expected to draw at least 250,000 people. Big names such as Little Richard Little Richard, 1935–, American musician and singer, b. The fair features 30 contests, more than 20,000 exhibits, 23 concerts and 284 vendors and food booths selling a range of offerings, from corn dogs to kettle popcorn to snow cones - which could be popular considering Curt Kaplan of the National Weather Service said temperatures are expected to hit highs of 98 degrees in some parts of the county.

Simi Valley resident Holly Hagins said she wants to take advantage of the carnival's absence and hit the fair in the first couple of days.

``Big crowds drive me nuts,'' Hagins said. ``So this will be perfect. There won't be as many distractions.''

Her 7-year-old daughter, Noel, said she won't mind missing the rides.

``I like cotton candy,'' Noel said. ``I like petting the animals in the petting zoo, walking around looking at stuff and playing the game where you pop the balloons with the darts.''

Today's activities include stock car racing
