Their fragrant blooms promise not to disappoint on Friday. ``There are some roses that will be blooming their little heads off on New Year's Day New Year's Day, among ancient peoples the first day of the year frequently corresponded to the vernal or autumnal equinox, or to the summer or winter solstice. While there will be plenty of rose petals on the parade floats, visitors can see more great blooms at a handful of public gardens in the Pasadena area. Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge and the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino have perhaps the largest rose gardens in the area. Each has at least 3,000 rose bushes with a mix of both modern and antique roses. Growing in the Wrigley Gardens at the Tournament House in Pasadena are 1,500 varieties of roses. The Arboretum of Los Angeles County also has a small garden of antique roses. Unfortunately, pruning begins in late December for the rose bushes at the Arboretum and Descanso Gardens. That ensures plenty of spring flowers. ``We have so many bushes that we have to start pruning in late December,'' said Mary Brosius, Descanso rose curator. ``But there will still be some for visitors to see over New Year's.'' |
