NORWEGIAN RESEARCH FOUNDATION ORDERS SECOND CRAY RESEARCH SUPERCOMPUTER
EAGAN, Minn., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), announced today that the Stiftelsen for Industriell og Teknisk Forskning ved Norges Tekniske Hogskole (SINTEF), the foundation for scientific and industrial research at the Norwegian Institute of Technology/University of Trondheim, has ordered a CRAY Y-MP supercomputer. The system will be installed second quarter at the institute in Trondheim, Norway.
This is the second Cray Research system to be purchased by SINTEF. The CRAY Y-MP system will replace a CRAY X-MP supercomputer, which was installed in 1987 and was the first Cray Research supercomputer in Norway. SINTEF plans to recognize its first Cray Research system by donating it to a museum. The CPUs of the CRAY X-MP supercomputer will be removed, and the shell will be relocated to the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology in Oslo, where it will be placed in a soon-to-be- completed exhibition on computer history in Norway.
SINTEF's CRAY Y-MP system will be an integral part of the Norwegian Supernet, the country's high-speed communications network. The 34- megabit-per-second network links several Norwegian universities, research centers, and other organizations in Trondheim, Oslo, Bergen, and Tromso. The CRAY Y-MP system will primarily be used by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and by scientists at the Norwegian universities.
"The CRAY Y-MP supercomputer will be of vital importance to the operational weather forecasting and research carried out at the Norwegian Meteorological Institutes," said Roar Skalin, project manager for supercomputing at SINTEF. "The system also will provide scientists at the Norwegian universities access to a resource that will fulfill a large portion of their supercomputing needs during the next three years."
The system will also be used by Norwegian Contractors, Oslo, an engineering company that is involved in structural analysis of offshore oil platforms, and by other Norwegian oil industry firms.
"We are delighted to continue providing computational solutions to SINTEF," said Bryan Little, vice president of Cray Research's European operations. "Key application areas within SINTEF include weather forecasting, structural analysis, and computational fluid dynamics. The CRAY Y-MP system will provide the supercomputing power these applications require."
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
