NORWAY'S QUEEN SONJA NAMED GODMOTHER OF MAJESTY OF THE SEAS
MIAMI, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway will christen Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's newest vessel, the 2,354-passenger Majesty of the Seas. The christening will take place in Miami on Sunday, April 26, the day of the ship's maiden voyage.
The christening is a traditional ceremony in which a ship's Godmother officially names the vessel, breaks a bottle of champagne against its bow and asks that the ship, its passengers and crew be blessed with safe journeys across the seven seas.
"We are honored that Her Majesty Queen Sonja has graciously agreed to be the Godmother of Majesty of the Seas," said Richard D. Fain, Royal Caribbean's Chairman and CEO. "Her involvement in activities of national importance and her commitment to today's relevant causes reflect the caliber of her concern. We are proud that a person of her stature will christen our ship."
In addition to her responsibilities as Queen of Norway, Her Majesty is involved in helping disabled Norwegian children and has been actively dedicated to the Norwegian Red Cross, serving as vice president from 1987 to 1990. Her Majesty is also deeply concerned about the plight of refugees and immigrants, receiving the 1982 Nansen Medal by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for her efforts. Additionally, Her Majesty is involved in her country's art and cultural activities and, being an avid and experienced skier, enjoys touring Norway's mountain areas.
Following the christening ceremonies, Majesty of the Seas will begin sailing every Sunday year-round from Miami to the Western Caribbean: Cozumel, Mexico; Georgetown, Grand Cayman; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; and Labadee (the line's exclusive resort area on the northern coast of Haiti).
Royal Caribbean's modern fleet of ships is known as "The Grand Resorts of The Seven Seas" and calls at the most popular ports throughout the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Alaska, Mexico, the Panama Canal, South America, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, the Mediterranean, Africa and the Canary Islands.
