NORTHERN TELECOM COMMENTS ON OUTLOOK FOR SECOND QUARTER 1993

TORONTO, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Northern Telecom Limited (NYSE: NT) announced today, following a meeting of its board of directors, that it will report a loss for the second quarter of 1993.
Jean C. Monty, president and chief executive officer of Northern Telecom, said: "The anticipated results principally reflect lower than expected public switching sales and continuing price pressures which will reduce gross margins in the quarter and the year. Revenues in North America and Europe with the exception of a few sectors, are showing slower growth than expected. Growth in Asia Pacific and the Caribbean and Latin America, however, continues to outpace our more traditional markets."
Monty went on to say, "In view of anticipated first half performance and the current outlook for the rest of the year, earnings for 1993 are expected to be significantly below 1992."
In a separate announcement, the board of directors of the corporation reported it had accepted the resignation of Dr. Paul G. Stern as chairman and director of Northern Telecom Limited.
At the same time, the board appointed O. Bradford Butler, the former chairman of the Procter & Gamble Company, to succeed Stern as chairman. Butler's appointment becomes effective immediately.
Stern joined Northern Telecom in March 1989 as vice-chairman and chief executive officer. He held the additional office of president from February 1990. From April 1990 until March 1993 he was chairman, president and chief executive officer. Stern became non-executive chairman in March 1993 when Monty was appointed chief executive officer of the corporation.
Monty joined Northern Telecom Oct. 1, 1992, as president and chief operating officer after having served as chairman and CEO of Bell Canada.
Northern Telecom's common shares are listed on the New York, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, London, and Tokyo stock exchanges.
