NORTHERN TELECOM ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO NON-EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN POSITION

 TORONTO, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Northern Telecom Limited (NYSE: NT) announced today that Dr. Paul G. Stern has decided to step down as chairman and to retire as a director, to devote his full attention to other interests.
 Dr. Stern said: "It has been an interesting and rewarding five years of association with Northern Telecom. I would like to thank the board, and most importantly the employees of the company, for their valued support during my tenure first as a director and later as chairman and chief executive officer. We have had a number of successful years together and we have given our best to accelerate the progress of the company. I feel it is now time to focus on my other varied interests."
 Dr. Stern became a director of Northern Telecom in April 1988 and in March 1989 was appointed vice-chairman and chief executive officer. He held the additional office of president from February 1990. From April 1990 until March 1993 he was chairman, president and chief executive officer. Dr. Stern served as non-executive chairman from March 1993.
 The board appointed O. Bradford Butler, the former chairman of the Procter & Gamble Company, to succeed Dr. Stern as chairman. Mr. Butler's appointment becomes effective immediately.
 Northern Telecom's common shares are listed on the New York, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, London, and Tokyo stock exchanges.
